"The move to cut costs by shutting expensive shop fronts is continuing unabated in the visual arts. The moves highlight the cost pressures on commercial galleries after successive years of poor sales, the rise of online shopping and art fairs as a way of doing business, and the relative ease of finding pop-up spaces at a time when “for lease” signs abound. “We don’t want to abandon our artists, but we do want to survive,” says Emily Rohr, who opened Short Street 14 years ago."
